Front Porches You’ll Want to Linger On

207 Morris Avenue, Lutherville Maryland

There is no time like fall to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine out on the porch. Whether it’s a cozy nook to get some extra reading done, or an extension of the home built for entertaining, we believe the front porch deserves as much attention as the rest of the house.

Americans seem to agree. According to the National Association of Home Builders, porch-building is on the rise, with a 23% increase across the country compared to two decades ago.

Porches extend your living space and provide a welcoming spot to receive guests in the open air.

In fact, Presidents James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley won elections shortly after their front-porch campaigns, where they invited potential voters to their homes to hear campaign speeches. Decades later, porches continue to be a place of both community and private respite outdoors.

Even if you are more interested in the aesthetic of porches, that’s understandable too, says Chris Grubb, President of Arch-Interiors Design Group in Beverly Hills. “An outdoor seating area may get little use, but it instantly expresses how inviting your home is,” Grubb explained in a Fox News interview.
