Artist’s Statement:
Instinct is present from birth in all living creatures. It occurs without conscious thought or deliberation. In this series, I am sharing the landscape within me. “Instinctual landscape” is a term that has no fixed definition. Our instinctual landscape is personal and unique to each of us. This is an invitation to explore the intricate relationship between our internal world and the external environment. Each painting is a poetic memory. My inherent connection to the natural world is through the creation of a universal internalized fairytale.
Biography:
Minas Konsolas was born in Greece and has lived in Baltimore since 1976, where he graduated from the Maryland Institute, College of Art. He is the former owner of Minás Gallery, an outlet for poetry and art, both visual and verbal. The gallery, one of Baltimore’s alternative art spaces, was a gathering spot for artists, writers, and performers for twenty-two years. He subsequently sold his business and now works from his studio in Charles Village.
Konsolas is known for employing a variety of artistic styles and techniques, which allows his work to continually evolve. His constant focus is how light interacts with color and form.
Konsolas has participated in three public mural projects in Baltimore City, in Greektown, at the Farmers’ Market, and at the Hanover Street Gallery. His work has appeared in numerous literary journals, including Little Patuxent Review and Passager. His original artwork and reproductions are widely collected, locally, nationally, and abroad. Several pieces of Konsolas’ work are part of the corporate collection of Visit Baltimore, the city’s tourist information center.
