Artist’s Statement:
Lissa is a representational painter, who paints from observation and focuses on the human figure and the landscape. Primarily, Lissa paints, en plein air (outdoors), in Baltimore City, throughout Maryland’s beautiful countryside, the coast, and at many other captivating locations across the country and beyond. When painting, she enjoys capturing the light at various times of the day using bold colors. Oil paints are Lissa’s preferred medium. She uses a combination of palette knife and brushwork to create texture and depth in her paintings.
Interpreting the mystique of the landscape and human figure on canvas is an exciting and wonderful challenge. Lissa gets completely immersed in painting. She often says, “the texture and smell of oil paint provide the perfect medium to explore our environment”. Painting outdoors affords Lissa the opportunity to capture a piece of history and nature’s bounty. Each painting brings a new opportunity for growth and learning.
This past year brought additional recognition of Lissa’s work. During Barnstormers 2024 in Frederick, MD, Lissa received the first People’s Choice award. Lissa was a juried artist in Plein Air West Reading 2024 where she won First Place in the 2024 quick draw (2 hour painting competition). In addition, in Mount Vernon Plein Air 2024, Lissa received the “Best Landscape Award” for her painting of Mount Vernon Square, “Watching Over Baltimore”. Last, she received an honorable mention during Ocean City Plein Air 2024 ’s quick Draw for her painting “Waiting to Open”.
